Earn up to 8% Yields with these 3 Old-Fashioned Telecoms

http://feedproxy.google.com

With all of the media buzz that surrounds next-generation smartphones and their new apps, it's hard for investors to get too excited about good old-fashioned telecoms these days. That's a shame, since these companies can be a rich source of dividends for income investors. Many pay 5% yields, and some yield as high as 9%.
Most of these high-yielding telecoms were founded decades ago to provide local and long-distance landline telephone services to rural communities.

American Gridlock, Part 2

http://feedproxy.google.com

Today we dive into Part 2 of Woody Brock’s notes from his new book, American Gridlock (www.amazon.com/gridlock). He looks at what we can do in the future to prevent another crisis like we had in 2008, why we need to change, how we bargain with China (will be very controversial, in China at least!), what capitalism really is, and then he addresses the thorny issue of what it means to distribute wealth fairly. What can be said to those concerned with the top 1% of the population owning a grossly disproportionate share of the nation’s wealth?

Simple Steps to a Better Retirement Plan

http://feedproxy.google.com

In a couple days, I’ll be heading down to Orlando to attend the 2012 World MoneyShow.
I always enjoy my time at this annual event because it gives me a chance to interact with other investors on a more personal level. I get to hear what they’re thinking about … to discuss the investments they’re using … and to talk more about the challenges and opportunities that they’re facing.
For the third year in a row, I’ll also be sharing some of my big-picture ideas, strategies, and investing ideas in a special workshop.

Risky Business

http://crystalequityresearch.blogspot.com

Investing for gain entails risk, right?  The real question is how much to pay for the risk.  Stated otherwise, how much of a discount should an investor require for the level of risk in an investment?  Economists have given us all sorts of fancy models to determine fair pricing.  Not one has been able to top the seminal work of Harry Markowitz, William Sharpe and Merton Miller with their Capital Asset Pricing Model.  The world has been so impressed with the CAP-M as it is fondly referenced in business schools the trio was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics.

Marketwatch: Why Did 24 Hour Trading Never Take Off?

http://feedproxy.google.com

I remember when the first discussions of 24 hour trading gained force in the late 90s thinking to myself "oh no.... won't they ever let us sleep? This is ridiculous."*  (then again the stock market was "fun" and "easy" then because we all could become millionaires trading NASDAQ stocks - why not have fun 24 hours a day!)

*that said, a lot of us now wake up all sorts of crazy hours in the middle of the night to check to see what greek irish portuguese spanish italian bond debt is doing!

Rare Earth Metals—Not Your Father’s Mining Biz: Byron King

http://feedproxy.google.com

The Critical Metals Report: No year has brought higher highs and lower lows to the rare earth space than 2011. Do you expect the same volatility in 2012?
Byron King: The short answer is yes. In this market, anything is possible. In 2011 we saw highs toward the beginning of the year because there was a lot of enthusiasm for the technology metals space. We experienced lows towards the end of 2011 because there was a general market selloff. It didn’t matter if you were stock-picking. The falling tide sucked everything down.

The Battle of the 200 Days?

http://feedproxy.google.com

Interesting spot we are in - 200 day simple moving average to the top, 200 day exponential moving average to the bottom.  Amazing how one-two sentences changed the whole complex of the day - the S&P 500 was trading in the 1273s pre market, above resistance, with yet another gap up open -  before Draghi crushed the free and easy money crowd, and it's been downhill since.

Dividend Investing Is Not Just A Trend

http://www.intelligentspeculator.net

It’s a bit annoying honestly. Why in the world do so many people in the media and elsewhere like to punch on dividend investing and those that use it. I’m not saying that it’s a perfect investing method or even the best one around, but saying that it’s just a fade or a big bubble is at least as ridiculous.

Tax Dollar Returns

http://crystalequityresearch.blogspot.com

In researching the January 17th article on making friends for algae-based renewable fuel production, I found it remarkable the disconnection between military fuel requirements and priorities and federal government spending.
Goal:  The U.S. Navy’s goal is to have a “green fleet” by 2016 and increase alternative fuels to 50% of Navy operations by 2020.
