I Joined a Credit Union
Well, I finally bit the bullet and joined a credit union. Many readers here have suggested I do so (they have actually raved about credit unions). I was waiting to find the right one with the right offer, and once I did, I pounced.

The Things You Don’t Want to Hear
The things you don’t want to hear are often the very things you should be thinking about and focusing on.
Whenever my weight used to peak, the last thing I wanted to hear from anyone was a remark about my weight. It made me angry to hear it and I would often just walk away from anyone who remarked on it.

Technical Glitch: Comments Not Working
This is just a quick note to say that the commenting system here on FCN isn’t currently working. We’re aware of the problem and are working on a solution. If you’ve been trying to post a comment, I apologize. Hopefully we’ll have things straightened out shortly. Oh, and special thanks to those of you that notified me of the problem via e-mail and/or Twitter. Have a great day!

How to Stay Relaxed During (And Make the Most of) a Job Interview
US News shares some thoughts on how to stay relaxed during a job interview. It's an "ok" piece in my opinion, but they leave out the BEST way (again, in my opinion) to stay relaxed during a job interview: rehearse.
Yep, you heard it correctly. If you rehearse the job interview in advance, you will be much more relaxed. You'll also perform better and be much more likely to get the job offer.

Some Thoughts on the Long Term
A few days ago, Donald left a provocative comment on my recent article How to Get Rich Quickly!. Although I think his tone is a bit aggressive, he does bring up an interesting point:
Yes this is good advice – work for 45 years, squirrel away your income the whole time, and when you are ready to die, you will be rich (*disclaimer – rich in 2011 dollars, maybe not so rich in 2043 dollars)

Words About Money are Often Subjective
A few weeks ago we got to discussing the various words many of us use to talk about how much money someone has or makes. It became clear pretty quickly that we all had different opinions on what certain words meant -- when it came down to putting a number on them. What words am I talking about? These, in particular, though I'm sure there are more:

Being a Referee Could Provide a Great Side Income
As many of you know, my son and I make some extra money as soccer referees (for specifics, see How to Make Money as a Soccer Referee and How Much I Made This Spring Refereeing Soccer.) It's not much money for me (I pretty much break even after expenses) but for him it's a solid source of income -- $400 or so per "season" (one in the spring and one in the fall) --

Financial Media, Press Releases, Hype, and Your Money
When I first started writing The Simple Dollar, I was a big proponent of financial publications like Money Magazine, Kiplinger’s, SmartMoney, and so on. I read them. I referenced them in posts. I even suggested that people subscribe to them.
For a long time, though, I’ve scarcely mentioned them. What happened?

How’s Your Retirement Portfolio Doing?
You may or may not believe me, but even though I blog daily about money I only check my investment portfolio balances every few weeks. It’s part of my selective information restriction diet. I found it curious that the S&P 500 is now at ~1350. This reminded me of this earlier WSJ article about how long-term savers actually haven’t done all that poorly over the last decide.

Costco Debate: Is College Worth It?
Does anyone read the Costco Connection -- the free magazine the retailer mails to members and offers free in its stores? I always pick one up whenever I'm in the store (I'm in a group plan at work and the main account holder, the company, gets mailed a magazine). I usually find an article or two that I like as well as get to find out about some new products available at Costco. It's not a real page turner, but then again, it's free. ;-)
