The Big Picture for the Week of January 8, 2012

http://randomroger.blogspot.com

Yesterday we executed a trade for most "large" accounts buying KLA-Tencor (KLAC). The pick is more of a top down decision (more on that in a moment). The company makes equipment used in manufacturing many types of semiconductor; data storage, LED, solar, nano and several more. The company has been around for quite a while, its history has generally been to outperform on the way up and lag on the way down. In the last few years it has evolved into a dividend payer, currently yielding a little under 3% which is very good for a technology company.

Banned Short selling,

http://just-charts.blogspot.com

"France, Italy, Belgium and Spain will impose new bans on short-selling or short positions beginning Friday, the European Securities and Marketing Authority said in a statement late Thursday. The measures come to "restrict the benefits that can be achieved from spreading false rumors" given the recent volatility in European markets in recent weeks, ESMA said. The French ban will prevent creating a short position or increasing any net-short position in French banks such as BNP Paribas FR:BNP +0.31% , Societe Generale FR:GLE +3.70% and Credit Agricole FR:ACA +5.14%"

Monday screencast: solar volatility

http://feedproxy.google.com

Companies that are in part dependent on government subsidies are always at risk taking a hit.  Solar stocks are in the penalty box in part because of reduced subsidies.  In addition a surplus of supply is putting pressure on prices.  Which is great for end users but is making for difficult times for producers.  The longer term picture for solar remains bright, due to increasingly competitive pricing down the road.  In today’s screencast a look at the battleground that is solar stocks.

Why Japan Will Turn to Solar Energy Following Fukushima

http://feedproxy.google.com

As the dire news continues to leach out of Fukishima, the silver lining in its nuclear cloud is that renewable energy technologies, despite their daunting start-up costs, are receiving renewed scrutiny.
Make no mistake – given the trillions of dollars invested over the last five decades in nuclear energy, the industry and its lobbyists will not go down without a fight, promoting new, "safe" reactor designs, etc. etc. etc.
But the Fukushima debacle has finally bared the industry’s darkest secret, it inability to manage its nuclear waste.

http://crystalequityresearch.blogspot.com

Temperatures are soaring across the U.S., but things are really sizzlin’ at one of the countries most important players in the solar power industry.  Yet it is a record $460.4 million order for advanced sapphire crystallization furnaces from an unnamed Chinese customer in the LED industry has turned up the heat at GT Solar International, Inc.

Biofuels About to Take Off – Just Not Yet

http://feedproxy.google.com

Investors looking for the next big thing after a hydrocarbon economy have a panoply of options, from solar to wind, as well as biofuels.
In terms of quickly ramping up production biofuels clearly win the race, but navigating the PR fluff and reality is not a simple thing.
The three main contenders for investor dollars are algae, jatropha and camelina. All have strengths and weaknesses, leaving investors to choose amongst them.

Wish I Surprised by This . . .

http://feedproxy.google.com

But I'm not.

Green energy, for the most part, looks more and more like a taxpayer-funded scam.

I'm all for solar, wind, you-name-it -- as long as they pay for themselves. But anything that needs to be subsidized by taking money from working people just doesn't make economic sense.
