The Big Picture for the Week of January 8, 2012
Yesterday we executed a trade for most "large" accounts buying KLA-Tencor (KLAC). The pick is more of a top down decision (more on that in a moment). The company makes equipment used in manufacturing many types of semiconductor; data storage, LED, solar, nano and several more. The company has been around for quite a while, its history has generally been to outperform on the way up and lag on the way down. In the last few years it has evolved into a dividend payer, currently yielding a little under 3% which is very good for a technology company.

Banned Short selling,
"France, Italy, Belgium and Spain will impose new bans on short-selling or short positions beginning Friday, the European Securities and Marketing Authority said in a statement late Thursday. The measures come to "restrict the benefits that can be achieved from spreading false rumors" given the recent volatility in European markets in recent weeks, ESMA said. The French ban will prevent creating a short position or increasing any net-short position in French banks such as BNP Paribas FR:BNP +0.31% , Societe Generale FR:GLE +3.70% and Credit Agricole FR:ACA +5.14%"

In addition a surplus of supply is putting pressure on prices. Which is great for end users but is making for difficult times for producers. The longer term picture for solar remains bright, due to increasingly competitive pricing down the road. In today’s screencast a look at the battleground that is solar stocks.

But the Fukushima debacle has finally bared the industry’s darkest secret, it inability to manage its nuclear waste.

Wish I Surprised by This . . .
Green energy, for the most part, looks more and more like a taxpayer-funded scam.
I'm all for solar, wind, you-name-it -- as long as they pay for themselves. But anything that needs to be subsidized by taking money from working people just doesn't make economic sense.
