This May Be the Safest Way to Invest in China
It's a familiar dilemma for U.S. investors. With the U.S. economy being stuck in low gear, delivering a paltry 1.3% growth in the second quarter of the year, investors are looking elsewhere for great returns. A great place to start is China.
China has been delivering terrific growth — in the second quarter, its economy grew 9.5%, which was five times the rate of the U.S. economy's growth in the same period. But investing in China also carries risks for the average investor. A case in point is Chinese companies making headlines recently for fraudulent accounting practices.
How Long Will It Take Mark Zuckerberg To Become The World’s Richest Man?
In last year’s Forbes rankings, which are generally the reference, Mark Zuckerberg ranks as the 52nd richest person in the world. It’s an amazing accomplishment for a 27 year old to rank on that list. The fact that he has decided to sign the Giving Pledge promising to give away at least 50% of his net worth to charity over the course of his life is truly impressive.
Apple (AAPL) Passes Exxon Mobil (XOM) as Most Valuable U.S. Company
While Apple (AAPL) flirted with passing Exxon Mobil (XOM) as the country's most valuable company earlier this year, the selloff the past few weeks has seen Apple's stock hold up relatively better - especially in the past few days - and as of yesterday's close we have a new market cap leader. While largely symbolic, it is quite remarkable for a company which some 14 years ago (almost to the day) needed a cash infusion from Microsoft to keep ticking.
Levy Harkins on Inflation
I haven't been blogging as much lately, mostly because I've been swamped with other duties. And doing anything with my portfolio has been non-existent as well. And I feel good about that for now.
You see, with all that's going on in the world (read: Major Uncertainty), my equities/gold/gold miners/cash position continues to give me comfort. Whether that holds or not, we'll see.
But I continue to read, read, and read some more. Value investors love to read and I'm certainly no exception. One of the best reads lately has been the Levy Harkins Q2 letter to investors.
Google (GOOG) Might Have A Shot At Social After All
Wow, who would have thought? In the past few years, Google had grown increasingly scared and maybe even paranoid about Facebook, its growing power and how it would end up impacting Google.
Big Talk Turns to Whisper
Management of KiOR, Inc. (KIOR: Nasdaq) and its bevy of investment bankers talked big in the weeks leading up the company’s initial public offering in late June 2011. The deal would be priced between $19.00 and $21.00 per share they said, potentially giving the company $210 million in proceeds. A self-proclaimed renewable fuels operation, KiOR needs the money to commercialize and perfect its proprietary technology platform to convert non-food biomass into hydrocarbon-based oil.
Marc Faber Now Expects a Bounce, While Still Intermediate Term Bearish
Say what you will but Marc Faber's call last week for a 'bear market' looks pretty darn good now. That came on Tuesday, when the S&P 500 had closed essentially at its primary support of 1250. To be fair he made the call earlier in the day...
Stand Corrected
The equity market has a way of humbling even those with the sharpest pencils. No matter how brilliant or successful, analysts and traders were dealt the harshest of critiques yesterday. Yesterday, on August 4, 2011, the U.S. markets declined by the largest percentage since the Fall 2008 financial system crisis. Some pundits have called it a “correction.”
What is a market correction anyway? It is defined as a downward movement in the equity market from 5% to 20% that is not large enough to be called a “bear market.”
New Stock Pick: Long Apple (AAPL) & Short Yahoo (YHOO)… Momentum Play?
I’ve said this a few times in the past but I’ll say it again, the goal of these stock picks is to make money, not try to come up with original ideas. Therefore, many of you will remember that about 6 weeks ago, I had opened the same exact trade, going Long Apple and Short Yahoo. Of course, that trade ended up doing very well, we closed it with a 24.93% return!
John Dizard: Mega-Bailout to Come?
John Dizard's Financial Times column has this insightful observation:
The Investment I’m Buying BEFORE June 30
I think we're near a tipping point. The day to watch is June 30.
Months, even years later, we might all look back upon that day as when things started to change.
If you've followed the news lately, you already know what happens on this day. It's when the Federal Reserve finishes "QE2" — its second round of quantitative easing since the recession began.
Put simply, this program amounts to the Federal Reserve borrowing money to buy Treasury bonds. The government is essentially selling Treasury bonds to itself.
It’s Time to Invest in Coal
By Marin Katusa, Casey Research Energy Team
Coal prices are surging ahead even as most other commodities pull back, spurred on by expectations that metallurgical and thermal coal production will again fail to meet rising global demand this year. The result? Record profits for major coal producers like Xstrata, a surge in acquisitions from coal-hungry India, Chinese electricity shortages, and a raging carbon tax debate in Australia amid record investments in that country’s coal-heavy mining sector.
US Housing Market on the Rise?
Source: ForexYard US Housing Market on the Rise?
US housing data beat expectations yesterday, as the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) released an assessment showing homes that were mortgaged by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac saw a rise in value of approximately 0.8% this past month. The report came one day after the National Association of Realtors published the existing home sales data that also met growth forecasts. The numbers may prove a turning point in the US housing market if growth can continue along this trajectory.
Why It’s Too Soon To Buy The Stock Market Dip
Wall Street grabs onto simple non-technical explanations when making its attempts to keep investors buying
After six straight down weeks the S&P 500 is down only 6% from its April peak.
That’s not near enough to factor all the negatives into stock prices. Those negatives include the rapidly-slowing U.S. economy, sharply-rising global inflation, plunging global markets as central banks raise interest rates to ward off inflation, the cuts in government spending yet to hit the U.S.
Texas Passes New York to Become Second Largest Economy in the States
Riding the wave of a natural resource boom, and a very tax friendly atmosphere - the state of Texas has passed New York over the past decade to take the second place spot (behind California) as the largest economy in the U.S. While there are some major issues in Texas such as incredibly poor K-12 scoring (which in theory could be blamed in part on lack of revenue allocating to education), this would really only hurt Texas in the long run if the state were a closed system - i.e.
Gold Mining Stocks Ready for Rally?
Sometimes I ask myself a question. If I suddenly inherited a pot of money, and was required to keep it as an investment portfolio, what's the first thing I would do with it?
Right now, I'd devote a decent portion to gold mining stocks. And I'd buy the ones I've held for well over a year now -- Newmont Mining (NEM), Goldcorp (GG), Agnico-Eagles Mines (AEM) and the Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX).
Why? Because the mining stocks have underperformed the bullion, and offer value.
Market Updates: Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), Pfizer (NYSE:PFE), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS)
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) said Monday its Office Division will make a June 28 announcement on Office 365′s next generation cloud service. YouTube has been a powerhouse in the online video arena since well before search giant Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) bought it for $1.65 billion in 2006. What’s still a question is how much the video-sharing site will add to Google profits.

Adding Pandora (P) To Our Stock Radar
This Wednesday was another interesting day for tech investors as Pandora (P) went public. Not only does it have a “cool” 1 letter ticker but its also a very interesting company that could possibly change the world. It’s not Facebook, but it still offers something that could have quite an impact over the next few years.
Back to Negative for the Day
I was just emailing someone a few hours ago that I did not think this was the bottom, and that before its said and done that 200 day moving average has to be broken. If nothing else, to flush out the technical traders, who will sell on that break. Bigger picture we have had little panic, and aside from yesterday it has been very methodical trading to the downside. I like to see a 'flush' selling moment to get constructive at the end of these selloffs, or at least to play a more tradeable bounce. It doesn't always work out that way, but usually it does.
